The other night at dinner we started to talk about music and how it brings back memories. I must admit that I was very slow to join the music scene as a teenager and probably the biggest nerd in my high school class of 1981.
My choice of music consisted of Barry Manilow, Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Jackson Five & Michael Jackson. Motown was (and is) probably my favorite. I loved my 8 track tapes, my Chevrolet – Cutlass Supreme and my pack of cigarettes. With my ‘Farrah Fawcett” hairdo, full on face of make-up and Tab, it was just me.
Jason, on the other hand, enjoyed the music of Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, and countless other rock and roll bands. We probably would have never met, much less fallen in love, had we been introduced during our high school or college years centered around our musical taste. It’s a wonder we are still together because I gave away at least 10 crates of his albums when we moved out of our first house. Ouch!
Top 40 Weekly Countdown with Casey Kasem
It was Sunday night when we started this conversation at dinner. Jason had gone for a run and was listening to Sirus XM – 80's music. The station happened to be playing the American Top Hits of the 80's – Counting down to the #1 Artist of the 1980s. Can you guess who it is? Top Song of the '80s?
We started to tell our daughter about how much we would look forward to the radio on Sunday’s and the Casey Kasem show. Casey Kasem was the MC for American Top 40. “The show began as a three-hour program written and directed by Bustany, counting down the top 40 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart. The show quickly gained popularity once it was commissioned, and expanded to a four-hour-program on October 7, 1978.” American Top 40
It’s such a treat now to turn on XM and listen to the old 70’s and 80’s music. I actually remember all the lyrics of the songs! It’s so funny to see the expression on my children’s face when I break out signing a song.
Are you wondering why is she writing a blog about Led Zeppelin? It’s mainly because the conversation brought back the memories and how music is a huge part of our memories. Here is an article explaining it a little more..Why does music trigger specific memories?
Stairway to Heaven was the main slow dance song at every dance in High School. It went on forever – especially if you weren’t happy with your dance partner. It is 7 minutes and 45 seconds. A lifetime.
We continued to talk about the '70s and 80's music and it's interesting how informed our daughter is about that period of music. By the way, if you haven't guessed, Top Artist of the '80s is Michael Jackson (so my taste wasn't that far off) Top 100 Artists of the 80s & Top Song of the '80s is Let's Get Physical by Olivia Newton-John - Billboard Hot 100 1980
I thought I would share my list of songs and memories:
Slow Song – Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven
Fast Song – The Commodores – Brick House – Still gets me swaying
Favorite Concert – Michael Jackson – Jacksonville, Florida - Victory Tour in Jackson
First Major Breakup Song – Ride Like the Wind – Christopher Cross
